PRORehab NewsPRORehab Athletic Trainer Covering US Men's Soccer Team in Deaflympics
8/26/2009
Late this summer, thousands of athletes will descend upon Taipei, Taiwan. They will be competing in the Olympics, but these games will be different. Unlike the 2008 games in China, with all the noise of the fans, whistles and starter pistols, these games will be silent. They are the Deaflympics. All of the athletes, officials, and volunteers who will participate are deaf. In 1924, the first International Silent Games were held in Paris, France. Every four years since then, deaf athletes have been gathering to compete in events that range from track and field to judo to football (soccer). In 1949, the winter games were added. The last Deaflympics held in Melbourne, Australia in 2005 drew over 3,100 athletes from 63 different countries. This year, one of PRORehab's Athletic Trainers will be volunteering his services. From late August until the middle of September, Charlie Weir will be providing athletic training care for the men's soccer team in Taipei. Look forward to more information about the Deaflympics and Charlie's experiences while he's in Taiwan.
